Survey on conditional probabilities of indicators for food and water provision under land use and land cover changes in the Upper East Region with researchers and agricultural extension officers in Ghana, 2015 and 2016

Researchers in WASCAL, scientists in Ghana and agricultural extension officers in the Upper East Region have been asked for their expert knowledge on different issues related to food and water provision under land use and land cover changes in the Upper East Region. The survey with the scientists in Ghana was conducted between October and November 2015; the survey with WASCAL scientists between December 2015 and May 2016; the survey with agricultural officers between July and August 2016. 37 field officers, 15 scientists in Ghana and 9 scientists in WASCAL have been consulted.

Purpose
The conditional probabilities of event occurrence were needed for a modelling approach with a Bayesian Belief Network on food and water provision in the Upper East Region.

Statement

The experts were asked on the following scenarios to provide their estimates on event occurrence:

- soil erosion under different shrub and tree density and rainfall intensity

- livestock per household with different income levels

- the shrub and tree density under different livestock densities

- the share of commercial farming in the Upper East Region under agricultural programmes and different income levels

- the share of cropland under different population densities and shares of commercial farming

- the crop type under different shares of cropland in the UER and shares of commercial farming

- the irrigated crop types under increasing or decreasing land availability

- the organic and inorganic fertilizer application under agricultural programmes, different income levels and different soil types

- the water use under different water types

- the water types under different income levels

In addition, field officers were asked:

- How much soil erosion is taking place in your district?

- How much soil erosion control is taking place in your district?

- How much yield reduction under low fertilizer input and soil erosion?

- For irrigated areas: How much yield reduction under 15-30% irrigation efficiency?

- Are there agricultural programmes in the dry season?

- How many farmers of your district are currently under agricultural programmes?

- How much water/food is consumed per household (HH) per day in your district?

Not all questions have been asked to everybody. Field officers were sometimes asked in groups of two or three people. The CPTs which are not filled by the respondent is not shown in the excel sheet. Values in one row are always in total 100% (empty columns means 0%).
