Fibremass of Conventional Upland Cotton after Different Pollination Treatments, Burkina Faso, 2015

Fibremass (lint mass) of conventional upland cotton (Gossypium hirsutum) was significantly higher after outcross pollination than after selfing. Hence, outcross pollination (e.g.transfer of pollen from flowers of one individual to another individual of the same species by bees) enhances fruit quality and hence the income of the smallholders.

Supplemental Information
Pollination experiments were carried out following Dafni (1992). Selfing refers to pollination within one flower (spontaneous selfing SS) or between flowers of the same individual (Handselfing, Geitonogamy HS). Outcrossing is the transfer of pollen between other individuals of the same species by biotic vectors such as bees (OC) or by hand (handcrossing HC). The control is open natural pollination without any manipulation of the flowers.

Statement
Pollination treatments were conducted in 2015 in a small village close to Dano, Burkina Faso. 50 plants of conventional upland cotton were randomly chosen. Each plant was subject to 5 pollination treatments following Dafni (1992). Each treatment was applied to two flowers per plant, resulting in 100 flowers per treatment. Fibremass was measured after fruits had developed and were mature.
