Sub-national Crop Production Statistics for Official Admin Units in West-Africa, 1961-2012 (combined from various sources)

Crop production statistics at sub-national level are provided by national and international organisations at different levels of detail. The downloadable file is a combination of many sources with the aim to generate long time series for homogeneous crops. The crop classifications follow the WAGR nomenclature for crops provided by the same author. In general, the statistics were created as follows:

3. FAO AgroMaps

Statement: To generate long time series at sub-national level,it was necessary to combine data from various sources. This makes it necessary to account for differences in crop classifications, definition and changes of administrative units, and series length.

The principle was to:

1.Use national statistics whenever possible

2. Compare with international data providers (e.g. CountryStat) for overlapping years

3. Select the series with closest match for missing values

It has tobe noted that data services are often project based and may be discontinued (e.g. AgriStat, AgroMaps). Also, updates from data providers may change entries for past years
